LONDON (Dow Jones)--World wheat acreage is likely to increase in 2011 compared with this year due to high prices, Toepfer International said Friday.
Of the major Northern Hemisphere producers, Russia is expected to be the only country where winter wheat sowings will fall on season, the German grain trade house said in its latest market report.
According to analyst figures, U.S. plantings are expected to increase by 1 million hectares, European Union plantings by 500,000 hectares and Ukraine's winter wheat acreage is expected to be 300,000 hectares more, Toepfer said.
Winter wheat plantings have stalled in Russia this year after severe drought in the summer dried out the soil.
"It seems relatively likely that the global harvested acreage in 2011 will be at a higher level than in 2010," the report said. "It is only in Russia that winter wheat sowings for the 2011 harvest is expected to decrease."
