Amino Acids For Animal Feedstuff
The world population will grow to 9 bln by 2050. The demand for healthy nutrition will rise in parallel. But sustainable food supply will only be possible with efficiency gains in agriculture. Meet, fish, eggs and milk are major protein sources in human nutrition. In animal production the feed is one of the key efficiency levers. Amino acids are the key feed components. Amino acids help saving planets resources and contribute to sustainable food production.

There are five essential amino acids for advanced animal nutrition: methionin, lysin, threonine, tryptophan and valine. The optimal supply of amino acids means that life starts need less feed - this saves natural resources.

When the amino acid is used the animal is much more efficient in a processing of a food which is fed to an animal and so more protein could be produced with less resources: water, land and emission of green house gases.

Animal Feedstuff Production In Russia
Compound animal feedstuff production in Russia reached 26 mln MT in 2016 though some experts estimate it as 40 mln MT.

Big local agribusiness holding companies provides 85% of this volume, 14% belong to independent local producers and about 1% of production is done by the foreign companies active in Russia.

The growth as 21% is forecasted till 2021 thus reaching 45-50 mln MT/ann.

The share of grain in compound animal feedstuff in Russia is 70% which is compared to EU countries (40%-50%). And while the supply of grain is provided locally the need in such components like amino acids, protein-rich concentrates, microelements and some other is covered by the importation.

The demand for amino-acids in Russia was estimated as 163 k MT in 2016. It is forecasted to grow by 44% in 2021.

L-lysine Globally
L-lysin is 2,6-di amino hexane acid with the chemical formula NH2(CH2)4CH(NH2)COOH and one of the major amino acids for animal feed. Global lysine market size in animal nutrition market was estimated at over 1.9 million tons in 2014 and is likely to reach over 3 million tons by 2023.

Swine was the largest application consuming lysine in the animal nutrition market and accounted for more than 55% of the total volume in 2014.

China is the largest lysine manufacturer in the world, and in 2015 its total capacity exceeded 1,800,000 MT/ann, while the consumption was approximately 700,000 tones.

L-lysine In Russia: Own Production
Russian customers consume different forms of lysine: in addition to Monohydrochloride form with the L-lysin content of 78-79% there are such forms as Lysine Sulphate 65% (< 51% of L-Lysine) and Lysine Sulphate 70% with not less than 55% of pure L-Lysine.

The differences in pure lysine content in the different forms could be the reason of the deviations of the estimated consumption and importation figures.

The first and only local producer of Lysine in Russia is a Preix Plant №1 Prioskolye in Belgorod Area. It started in September 2015 and had a target to produce 57 th MT/ann of lysine sulfate (equivalent to 35 th MT of lysine chloride in crystal form ). Byproducts are starch (23 th MT), bran (39,6 th MT) and gluten (20,8 th MT).

Except own local production in Prioskolye there were also other plans to build up the lysine manufacturing in Russia.

In 2012 Evonik Industries announced the decision to build up a plant in Rostov Area together with DonBioTech Russian company. The facility was scheduled to go on stream in 2014 with a capacity of around 100,000 metric tons of Biolys® as was mentioned at Evonik official web site.

The plant nevertheless did not come into operation as until now and the photos of the construction process published regularly at web site of DonBioTech is the only source of information update we found.

There were no update found about the plans of Agroholding to build up a plant in Yubileyny (Tumen Area) after the first publication were made in 2016.

Importation Of L-lysine To Russia
In spite of own production started recently the importation of lysin to Russia still continues growing.

In 2016 the importation of lysine to Russia grew 6% compared to the previous year and was close to 97 kMT.

The trend continued also in 2017:

The biggest part of imported lysine came from China (83%).

Main Users Of Lysine
The biggest consumers of lysine are the agriholdings like Koudice MKorma (the JV of Russian MKorma and Dutch De Heus), Megamix, Provimi (the brand of Cargill), Miratorg, Agrobalt Trade, Aleiskzernoprodukt, Reifeissen Agro, DSM Nutrition and others.

Main Exporters
The well known world lysine producers are Ajinomoto Co, Archer Daniels & Midlands (ADM), Evonik, BASF, Kyowa Hokko, Cheil Jedang Corporation and others. The biggest suppliers to Russian market are Eppen and Meihua Group.

The Nearest Prospect
Agriculture is one of the very few industries in Russia undergoing if not the real boom but the noticeable growth.

The total amount of compound animal feedstuff production might be expected to reach 50 mln MT/ann in 2021 and some experts think it is a very moderate forecast.

The part of grain in this stuff will slowly but continuously be decreasing to the level of more developed markets.

Thus the demand in amino-acids and l-lysine in particular will grow in Russia even faster than the growth of animal feed production in general.

Though the of Premix Plant №1 was announced to produce as much as 57 kMT/ann of L-Lysine Sulfate the figures of its actual annual production volumes are not available.

The start of Evonik JV in Volgodonsk was already postponed for 3 years and there is no update information when it is finally going to be launched. Looks like the producers faced some problems and who knows how long the problems will continue and will Tyumen producer face the same problems or not.

Based on above said and based on the 1st Q importation data one can expect the further growth of lysine importation to Russia.

Note: The figures mentioned in importation statistics above concern only mono products, some amino-acids are imported in the form of ready made feed additives which are coded in the customs statistics differently. Experts estimate this share as 10-12% of the total value.
