Tatarstan eyes $1bn biotechnologies program

Authorities in the republic of Tatarstan have approved a $1bn Tatbioregion program - biotechnologies megaproject, regional officials report. Of the total funding, $100m is reportedly to be assigned from the federal budget, $200m is to be put up by regional authorities and $700m is hoped to be raised from non-budgetary sources. Under the program, two biopharm plants, with projected annual capacity of 40 mln packages of medicine, are to be put into commission in the region. A grain processing complex, with projected annual capacity of 1 mln tons, is to be launched by 2013 in Alabuga special economic zone, officials said. Other projects under the program include biogas plant with annual capacity of 500 mln cubic meters, fast-growing forest plantations, bio earth cultivation system, production of feed stuff for animals and birds and a center diet in Kazan. The program is scheduled to be carried out in 2010-2020.
Under plans, by 2020 production of biotechnology products is to account for 3-5% of the regional GDP
