Over 60% of harvested grain - bread-grain

Approximately 60-65% of grain harvested in Ukraine is bread-grain and by its quality it complies with the second and third class indexes, Vice Prime Minister Viktor Slauta told journalists during a working visit to Chernihiv region. According to the government member, in the majority of Ukrainian regions, bread-grain has better indexes against the previous year, and in some eastern regions first class grain was threshed - with 35% gluten.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev promised to grant Russian farmers 35 billion rubles ($1.15 billion) in state support, following the heat wave that has destroyed nearly one-quarter of the country's crops this summer. "About one-quarter of grain crops have been scorched in the country. Unfortunately, many farms are in a pre-bankruptcy status. The situation is severe, I would even say extraordinary," Medvedev said. The 35 billion ruble support would augment regional aid to victims of the country's worst heat wave, he said.

Russia's state-run grain trader, the United Grain Co (UGC) estimates investments in infrastructure necessary to raise the country's grain export capacities by 2015 at $1.79 billion, a UGC report showed on Tuesday. "The increased efficiency and competition on the infrastructure services market will permit cutting grain costs by up to $20 per tonne," said the report by UGC CEO Sergei Levin, prepared for the International Grain Council in London, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has called on the government to make sure conditions are in place for Russia to increase its agricultural export potential, and to continue efforts to create an effective mechanism for smoothing-out seasonal price fluctuation on agricultural products. "We need to provide conditions for our export potential to increase, to develop domestic market infrastructure. I have grain in mind, our potential is growing, but we need to move toward opening markets for other kinds of agricultural products. It's possible," Putin said as he opened a Friday meeting dealing with issues of budget-spending planning for 2011-2013.

Russia is likely to harvest this year 90 million metric tons of grain and not 97 million tons as was forecast earlier, the agriculture ministry said Monday. The ministry said about 15% of winter grains had been destroyed by bad weather, resulting in winter grain harvest forecast this year going down to 42 million tons whereas the harvest last year was 46 million tons. Spring grain harvest is forecast at about 48 million tons.
