The development of deep grain processing in Russia is the only way to increase domestic grain consumption, which has been shrinking in recent years, Vice President of the Russian Grain Union Alexander Korbut said at a news conference Monday.
Korbut attributed the decline to reduced grain consumption in the foodstuff industry and the development of cattle breeding technology.
"The only way to raise domestic consumption is to shift to deep grain processing, that is to produce lysine and starch, which is used to make plastics and such," Korbut said.
Deep grain processing would only be economically viable if the facility's processing capacity amounts to at least to 300,000 tonnes of grain annually, Korbut said. The construction of similar facilities should be encouraged in the Altai Region, the Volga Federal District, and the Siberian Federal District, Korbut said.
According to the grain union, a number of plants focusing on deep grain procession are currently under construction in Russia, including in the Penza Region and a proposed facility in the Chuvash Republic.
