Evonik Industries' board has approved previously announced plans to manufacture the animal feed amino acid L-lysine in Russia. The project, at Volgodonsk, will be established by OOO DonBioTech, a joint venture with the Varshavsky Group (Moscow). The jv will serve predominantly the Russian market. "Russia will become an important market for us, given that demand there for amino acids used in animal feed has experienced healthy growth for years," says Patrik Wohlhauser, board member/consumer, health, and nutrition at Evonik. "The special biotech-based L-lysine, which Evonik markets under the name of Biolys, is benefiting from growth in worldwide meat consumption." The jv will employ Evonik's fermentation technology, which has optimized efficiency as well as raw material and energy consumption levels. The plant will consume wheat procured from Russia's Rostov region. The plant will be built for easy expansion at a future date. Evonik holds a minority stake in DonBioTech.
OJSC Russian Agricultural Bank (Moscow) is interested in participating in the financing of the project, Evonik says.
